Goals for 2020

At the beginning of the year, like most humans, I made a list of new year’s resolutions. But let’s face it, they almost never pan out. So this year, I made them slightly different. Smaller goals, over a longer period of time. 

A big one was to do 100 Zumba classes this year. I discovered Zumba at our local Virgin Active in October 2018. You don’t know this about me, but I am moer lazy. I absolutely hate all types of exercise. My perfect day would be spent in front of the TV eating salt and vinegar chips. True story. That all changed when we moved to Cape Town in 2017. All of a sudden everything was new and gorgeous. And outside. My husband is the active one, always dedicated, even on holiday. Not me. Not at all. So we started taking the dogs for walks on the beach and in the nature reserve by our house. Weekends were spent going to the beach and walking to the lighthouse. We live in the most beautiful place on earth!!

Then we joined the gym. Hated. Every. Minute. I started water aerobics with the elderly and for a little bit, that was fun enough. In March 2018 my Banting journey started and I knew I had to find something I loved, or just quit the gym and call it a day. I stumbled into a Zumba class and fell in love with it. My instructor is the best, and as she was training, she offered loads of extra classes every week. I was hooked and have not looked back since. Now I do 3 hour marathon classes, for fun!!! This probably had been the biggest change in my life thus far. From being couch potato, to eating no potatoes!!

Another goal was to change my Instagram bio. I started my Insta account in August last year as a way to keep myself accountable. It has turned into the most unexpected source of joy. I have “met” so many lovely people, going through the same struggles as me. Sharing recipes, tips and just generally being awesome people. My secret dream is to meet them all one day and just tell them how nice they are. I have shared some very personal things (and deleted said personal things the next day) and the response was overwhelming.

But back to my goals.  My bio was written fast and furious, all whilst angry at myself for gaining 5kg in a few months. It took more than a year to loose 10kg, and I fuck it up in a few months. Last year was a tough one. I had 2 major surgeries and just about everyone in my family passed away. All in the space of a few months. I was sad, recovery meant I couldn’t work, and everything just piled up. Starting the Instagram account really helped me focus. The community also encouraged me to not be so hard on myself. Clearly my journey is going to be a moerse long one, and that’s ok too. Just keep swimming. Oh, and go follow me @banting_in_cape_town and meet some great humans!

Here is another great example of what the old me would never ever even attempt. We did a kayak tour of the penguins in Simon’s Town and I manage to keep up the whole entire time. I even enjoyed it. Who am I????

1: 100 Zumba classes

2: Change Instagram bio

3: Get under 10 kg again (so flippen close)

4: Try as many new Banting recipes as I can

5: Step on the gym scale and not cry

6: Start a blog

The blog idea was a silly one, and it really is only there to give me a bigger space to talk more crap. Also, one more thing I can cross off my list!
